Memories of Vera from Susan Frances

Created by Richard 10 years ago
Jimmy and Vera Cox were close friends of my parents Robert and Renee Preedy. Vera and Renee were in the WAAF’s and enjoyed going out to dances, on cycling trips, walking and attending church together. My Mum was very fond of Vera and our families often visited each other when we were young, despite having no cars and long trips on public transport. Without a doubt Vera was the sweetest person in my life, and I always looked forward to seeing her. She exuded love and caring, and could not have thought ill of anyone even if she tried. I remember her being so interested in ‘me’ and making ‘me’ feel so special and important. As a teenager who struggled with self-confidence and acceptance of who I was she was a breath of fresh air. As I matured and learnt some of life’s lessons, Vera often came to mind as a role model for her ability to truly demonstrate love to every soul she encountered. I didn't see her much after I moved to Australia, but she did come to some family gatherings that were held when I returned home. Even at quite an advanced age I remember her making the trek across London on public transport to my parent’s house for their wedding anniversary (possibly their 60th). We were all worried about her getting home late in the evening on her own but she was quite confident that she would be safe. She didn’t feel fear and fear would not prevent her from doing anything. As a woman who travels alone a great deal too I really understood that and admired her – I believe that we attract what we fear and if we surround ourselves with trust in other people and believe in the goodness of people, we will be safe. Vera trusted in God and was never afraid to tell people – she knew I didn't believe that when I was older but she never judged me for it, and I enjoyed some frank and open conversations with her about our beliefs. I was so sad to hear of Vera’s deterioration once she moved north, and missed the Christmas card she always sent when she was well. She will remain in my heart as the most shining example I have had of a pure and generous spirit who loved everybody equally and wanted nothing back. I can only aspire to be like her. If only the world had more Vera’s .... Thank you Vera for all you have meant in my life. Sue Frances Stanthorpe, Queensland Australia 13 December 2013
