Memories of Vera from Revd. Eric & Joan Allen

Joan writes: Vera & Jimmy Cox came into our lives in 1954. We arrived in Thornton Heath, Surrey as newly-weds, just setting out on our journey of Christian ministry at St John’s Congregational Church. Jimmy and Vera were young parents and also the leaders of the Youth Club. Vera was always a quiet presence, full of love and concern for many people, not only in the congregation but in the neighbourhood. She was an influence for good in our large Women’s Meeting, but more particularly amongst the youth club members, encouraging the shy ones and any with low self-esteem. When she spoke to you there was immediate eye contact; it was straight from the heart, and whether it was words of advice, of comfort or encouragement or (rarely) of criticism) - she spoke with love. I remember her telling me about prayer-time with 4 year old Richard, that even then he had learned to think of others and pray for the cold and hungry! Vera’s witness to her Christian faith touched so many people then, and her influence has stayed with me through the years since. She never gave up believing that prayer can change lives. Jimmy and Vera went through anxious times, and their faith was tested when Richard and John were both diagnosed with sight defects. But with steadfast encouragement from Fred and Winnie Burr they put their trust in spiritual healing, and many helpful weekend visits were made to the Chapel of Burrswood Christian Healing Centre, Groombridge. With such support they were able to undertake the practical decisions about their education as they moved first to Wallington and then Strawberry Hill in active membership of local Congregational churches. Their faith and prayers won through and today Richard and John are living testimony to the strong Christian love and commitment of their parents. Eric adds: Vera had a radiant countenance and such a winning smile. She shared her life-experiences with genuine openness and transparency, making herself vulnerable in a truly Christ-like way, always caring for others. When in later years she wrote to us you could hear her voice and feel the prayers of peace and reconciliation emanating from her. Thanks be to God for every remembrance of Vera, and the privilege of a small share in her long life. Alleluia! Amen.
